Hi all,

I collected my new tank for my rescued foot long red belly Pacu yesterday - transit van job... It's rather large at 300 gallons! It's a koi vat, really but should look ok with a treated wood surround (epoxy with no fungicide) and an acrylic enclosure. Have a 1000gph pond pump and pond filter to go with it. I might have enough heaters

With a decent enclosure, I can let the fish jump if they wish and going tall to six feet frm the deck will keep the cats off, possibly. The pond would look too flat without an enclosure, I think and I can possibly have a waterfall and plant pockets fixed to the back wall. May knock a hole in the wall and have a ducted fan wet air extract to take care of that problem.

Just have to decorate the main lounge first, then it's going in. One point three tons of beastie tank.

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I'd like to do the classic and get a red tail cat but this tank is too small for one of those - i'd need a 30 foot swimming pool. It'd be too small for a black pacu too but maybe ok for a red belly.

Somewhere for my plecs anyway!

I'll have to find a tree that's blown down somewhere for 'bogwood'... Snh, snh.

I'll be in a good mood for MONTHS!

Good thing there's a concrete floor!

Just a quick shot of the beastie pacu's current home. Too small already!

Hi there,

The tank is still in the outhouse as we slowly decorate the main lounge. I'll post pics as it gets set up - it's a big ugly laguna koi vat, about the biggest rectangular self supporting one I've seen.

As there will be cats and a dog around I didn't want to just put a flat piece of acrylic on as a cover. The plan is to make an surround/enclosure with sliding acrylic doors and I've twigged a way to stop splashes getting out. It should end up six feet tall so the cats can't jump on top and drive the pacu mad!

Filtration should be interesting - I'm going to need gravity fed trickle filters and a fludised bed in there somewhere.

I have a sneaky feeling there might be the odd big splash as a flying arowana goes past!

I'm a bit hooked on pufferfish at the mo, just had two Celons for about three weeks but hope to set up another seahorse tank next year at some point :)

Finally got the thing set up!

It's in a conservatory at the moment - still haven't got around to the decorating in the lounge...

I just couldn't leave it any longer because the filtration was no longer coping with the pacu.

Got a pond pump at one end feeding a pond filter at the other. Heaters are inside the pond filter, so they get the cooler water from the other end of the vat. Pond filter is inside the box to minimise flooding possibilites :-) The old external is on, along with an internal and a big powerhead for aeration.

Added the keyholes, angels and plecs (two each) and a syno that the pacu was living with - he's not eaten them yet.

The pacu seemed nervous to start with, hiding in a corner by the filter. So I gave him the only 'cave' I could think of - a 90l plastic dustbin!

I'll get to the beach for half a tree at some point fairly soon!

Will post a pic when I can - no sidings etc so it looks a mess just now.

Here you go - looks rubbish but appears to be working as expected. Only 300W of heating needed at this time of year to keep it at 25C.

Would you believe it - I had to add more filtration to cope with the pacu's waste. Modified a 60l plastic storage box and added mature pond filter foam, 10kg of mature gravel and 15kg of Alphagrog fire clay koi pond media.

Might be enough now, that thing can widdle for england
